Group Murals: Drawing and Collage
In this studio we created a controversial ad that aimed to inform society of the way the world views controversial issues. Cartoon drawings have been used for years to tell a message or story to a viewer. "Story is high concept because it sharpens our understanding of one thing by showing it in the context of something else." (Pink, p.103) Through imagery we can understand the irony or the moral of the story. In my personal drawing I took the concept of an all American Family and turned it in to something that people usually don't imagine, I used very few words in my drawing but it speaks and tells a story for itself. This studio also realted to my own personal identity and relationships that are important in my life. I am dating an African American man and often times, even in today's society people judge and see it as wrong.
I think that students should have the ability to talk about controversial issues in the classroom and form effective arguments that they can share with the class. This studio could be use in the classroom in so many ways. For social studies they could make political campaigns or as we did something more controversial, once they made their drawing they could share it with the class and have them try and understand their point of view.

Story Quilts: Watercolor
This studio went along well with the big idea of story. It allowed you to tell a story through a picture in the middle but the "quilt" pieces along the edge made it complete. The little details in this studio were so important in getting the message across and allowed me to add emotion to my art work "What begins to matter more is the ability to place these facts in context and to deliver them with emotional impact." (Pink, p.103) Through my work I felt I wanted my viewers to see and feel apart of being on the yellow brick road, and I wanted viewers to get a feeling of the unknown or the path untraveled.
In my classroom I would use this art studio during writing, they could create a quilt of the big moment in their story making sure to add small detail, they could then use their image to add even more detail to their writing because it would allow them to visual see what they wanted it to look like. Students could also use this studio in reading, they could create a quilt that the would give a character, creating an image that would be important to that character in the book. Bullying is a problem in schools today it would be awesome to do this quilt together as a class, creating a friendship quilt, this may help break down biases and get everyone working as a team.

mini sculptures from found objects
Creating a sculpture out of found objects was difficult but the messages that were created were so beautiful and well worth it. We took something that we take for granted and expect it to always be there and create it into something wonderful, through this we tell viewers a story. In my case we used a paper bag and created it into a dead try, symbolizing the over use of paper in our society. Our sculptures told stories in themselves and viewers could relate and understand the problems we have in our world. These sculptures were also personal and were based of beliefs that we have and wanted viewers to know. The sculptures were often times ironic and have a sense of humor to them but this is what allows viewers to see the big picture, "Humor embodies many of the right hemispheres most powerful attributes and ability to place situations in context, to glimpse the big picture, and to combine differing perspectives into new alignments." (Pink, p. 198) This project also called for team work. Working with people builds on the idea of relationships, and being able to relate and take another persons view on something and putting it together with your own.
Students would love this studio, it would allow them to be creative and build. Students could use this in reading to create an important object that the character may need. The students could create something to start a campaign to prevent paper waste using wasted recyclables. The students could also create a sculptures of something important to people at different time periods and then tell viewers why it was essential for them.
