Finger Puppets: Modeling Compound
Finger Puppets: Modeling Compound
Nick Cave is a fantastic artist who captures not only the big idea of celebrations but stories, identity, and relationships. The studio lesson also captured all of our big ideas we have delved into this semester. The finger puppets were a celebration of something about our personal identity; it showed relationships between the clothes the puppet was wearing or the different animals that represent a personal trait. The puppets could represent art metaphorically by comparing your traits to animal like traits, Pink states, “In a complex world, mastery of metaphor—a whole-minded ability that some cognitive scientists have called “imaginative rationality” has become ever more valuable.”(p. 139)
This studio would not only be beneficial for students but inventive and exciting for students. There are so many different ways in which you could use this studio for example; in science you could study the different elements that makes up the compound or make your own, in math you could measure out ingredients to make the clay. Student could make a puppet to represent something that they want to celebrate about their own personal traits, and then write a personal narrative about why it is one of their favorite traits.

Artist Norman Rockwell

Norman Rockwell saw the little moments in life that deserved to be celebrated and recognize. Rockwell achieved symphony through his work, Pink would suggest “ the capacity to synthesize rather than to analyze; to see relationships between seemingly unrelated fields; to detect broad patterns rather than to deliver specific answers; and to invent something new combining elements nobody else though to pair.” (p.130) This studio opens my eyes to modern day art that could be used in the classroom often.
I would use this studio in many different subject areas. Students could write a magazine article in writing and then create a cover and title to go along with the article, increasing reader’s interest. For Social Studies, students could create a cover page for a specific time period and add images and text that would go along with that specific area. For geography students could create a travel magazine and design it to interest viewers to want to visit that place.

Miriam Schapiro celebrated the identity of women and their relationship in the world. Her artwork captures the story of women and through her perseverance women’s art became recognized in the world. She was able to capture the big picture of women in America. Pink suggests “The capacity to see the big picture is perhaps most important as an antidote to the variety of psychic woes brought forth by the remarkable prosperity and plentitude of our times.” (p.143)
Although this studio time was a choice opportunity I chose to create one of Miriam’s projects for kids. I created a heart of the women who have influenced me most in my life. I think that the students would love created a collage of someone who influences them, along with this they could write a letter to that person explaining how much they look up to them. Students could also study about the women’s suffrage movement and create a collage of how women’s lives have changed over time.
